INDIVIDUAL
Individual and family health insurance is a type of health insurance coverage that is made available to individuals, families, or children only, rather than to employer groups or organizations. Given the option, most people would prefer to have their employer provide group health insurance coverage due to cost. But, if this is not an option for you, it is still important for you to seek coverage and can be a good choice if your employment may change. Sometimes the cost to add a spouse or dependant is very expensive so individual coverage may be a good fit. Individual insurance is purchased directly from an insurance company, through an agent. When you apply for individual insurance, you are evaluated in terms of how much risk you present. This is done through a series of medical questions. Your risk potential determines whether you qualify, and how much your insurance will cost. Individual health insurance can be denied, may exclude pre-existing conditions and may have waivers.

MEDICARE
The federally sponsored program originating in 1966 to provide health care for seniors and retirees. Currently, once you have been employed and qualify for social security you are eligible for Medicare on the 1st day of the month of your 65th birthday. You may also qualify for Medicare if you are receiving social security for two years following a disability. There are two options you need to consider once you have received your Parts A & B Medicare benefits. First, is a traditional supplement to Medicare. This will give you the greatest flexibility in providers and will allow you to receive benefits anywhere throughout the US. However, the drawback is the premium involved and, if elected you will need to add a Part D prescription Drug plan.
The second and less expensive option is a Medicare Advantage Plan. This involves assigning your Medicare benefits directly to an insurance company. The advantage is lower monthly premiums and the plan may include a Part D drug benefit. However, you will be subject to co-payments when you use these plans and you may have a network of providers in which you must utilize. Your benefits may also be limited outside your service area. The right plan will depend upon your individual circumstance.

SHORT TERM MEDICAL
This is temporary health insurance that offers coverage for a short time period – i.e., 30-185 days. Many short-term health insurance policyholders are between jobs, waiting for employer group coverage, laid off, on strike, recent college graduates or seasonal employees.
